Contacting Ron Wilch, also known as the Wardrobe Doctor, was the best decision I’ve made in 2019 thus far. Mr.Wilch, the CEO of Philly’s award-winning Wardrobe Clinic is phenomenal at his craft; knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and willing to share the wealth with others. Truly a pioneer of unique and personable fashions.
This past weekend I contacted Wilch for a short notice alteration for two pairs of pants. They were an ok fit everywhere except for the waist, a reoccurring problem I have with almost every pair of pants. He saw the pants on me, immediately recognized the problem, and also suggested another alteration that would make one pair fit just perfect. Before I departed so he could begin working, he asked something that my prior tailor never asked me, “When would you like to pick them up?” Though it was a short notice appointment, he was flexible and skillful enough to complete the alterations at a reasonable to fast pace for someone who had a wardrobe emergency. Luckily, I was in no rush. I came back three hours later and I had brand new pants that compliment my body better than ever.
The love Ron Wilch has for what he does is heart-warming; on top of his various services, he remains grounded in his culture by marrying his love of the fashion industry to dedicating his time sharing 26+ years of experience with the community. He shares that in the future he’d like to create jobs in the fashion realm and give back as much as possible. “Boys to Bosses” is a nonprofit program that teaches young men the art of fine tailoring clothes; set to take place over the course of four years from June through September. This paid summer opportunity will include New York field trips, visits from guest speakers, a free meal program, and all tools/supplies will be provided. As Wilch says, “The skill of tailoring is becoming a lost art.” But not if he can help it, you can support Boys to Bosses here.
The mass production of clothing, knowledge, and research that create your favorite pieces are often undermined. China. Bangladesh, Srilanka, Mexico, and India are currently in the lead for clothing manufacturing, predominately due to the low pay rate of the workers making our clothes. Not Wilch's’ clothes, in the future, he plans on pairing with an all womxn manufacturer based in Liberia (Libya?) and eventually becoming a long-term partner. As a woman of color, I appreciate the additional efforts to support womxn of color in their endeavors.
Stay informed on the Wardrobe Clinic, nothing but expansion waits ahead. Wilch intends on opening a Fashion Resourcing office and Design Centers in the future; from previous work, I expect an all-inclusive, professional, and one of a kind experience for anyone who partakes in these ventures. If you haven’t had a tailor or you’re just looking for a new one, Ron Wilch is your guy. It’s time, in 2019 you deserve clothes that fit you properly accommodating your beautiful figure.
